More grant money (100,000) for Nash Farm for bike and walking trails. 130,000 total project cost

Grant= 100,000
Local match= 4,590
In Kind+ 25,410

Where does the money in the Grant match fund come from? does anyone know? is it our splost tax dollars? is it from our property and sales tax dollars?

Then you have the yearly maintenance on these parks. It never ends with the spending. Like Reid Bowman stated today in the BOC meeting "we are not maintaining what we have now" and referred to the Moseley Park. Reid Bowman was the only one who opposed with a no vote on the application of the 100,000 grant monies for Nash Farm today.

Tomorrow's agenda in the BOC meeting will discuss awarding a bid to build ten (10) Soccer fields and a concession stand at the North Mt. Carmel Park for a whopping 1.8 million dollars!

The cost is $1,897.685 for 10 soccer fields and a concession stand. That is $190,000 per field. Shall we revisit the connections between Potts and our commission members - and the favorable zonings granted in the past?

That's a lot of money for those soccer fields at N. Mt. Carmel Park and a concession stand. Look closely at who has been picked to build these soccer fields and which person on the BoC has a connection to them. But of course pockets might get lined in this deal. Remember "follow the money."

Once again Mathis is trying to slip stuff by us for her beloved Nash Farm Park.
I watched the meeting and I must say that some of the Commissioners seem to have had it with Nash Farm Park. The Grant is a very bad idea at this time as Mr. Bowman stated and I am glad that he stood up and voted no on the grant. I am also happy to see the Commissioners admit that they have been getting contacted by voters about the Battlefield sign that needs to be changed. It has been proven that the battle did not take place there and with the sign that is there now misrepresents the park to the people of the County. Hopefully the Commissioners will keep on Mathis about this park that I think needs to be sold and forgotten about. I was glad to see Mr. Bowman put Mr. Bush on the spot about the work force that would keep up the park something is very wrong with what they are doing with it. Remember Mathis is on the paper work as an incorporator of Friends of Nash Farm so we need to look into where the money is truly going here after all it is your money that they are playing with.

Regarding the BOC meeting today and the approval of the 10 additional soccer fields.

Splost dollars at work. I am all for children having athletic activities. I am merely very concerned regarding how much all this is costing, after all splost monies came from the tax payers.

We are in a recession, unemployment is at 10.4%, we have many empty buildings, empty strip malls and foreclosures to deal with.

14 Tournament fields are great, However is it the right time to spend spend spend? I think it is time to tighten up the budget in our county and instead of meeting the budget each year we should have a surplus and let it draw interest. I do not think that Henry Countians want another Atlanta or Gwinnett here, we love our ruralness. Under the current powers that be,it seems to be all about how big we can get and who can get in on it.

I hope the parks and rec dept can handle it. They did get an award today.

The BoC should put a hold on their spending during this time of recession, but they are not in agreement with the public who provide the money. Sure those who have children who play soccer will love this but is it truly needed.

A couple of points:

- HC Citizen is correct. Maybe $190K is a lot for making the land flat and planting grass. I would imagine there are a lot of companies out there today that would do it for a lot cheaper due to the economy.

- SPLOST Dollars - I understand that the funds have to go towards what was in the SPLOST referendum. Is that not the case here?

- can someone take the lead and explain to BJ and the boys that just because we build it today does not mean we will have money to maintain it tomorrow? I would be curious to know if the P&R budget has included the extra dollars in it for maintaining these new facilities.

It has been explained to BJ and the boys about what is spent and bought today must be cared for tomorrow. But that has fallen on deaf ears. The county cannot continue to spend on projects that must be kept up in the future especially ball fields because that one cent SPLOST may not always be in the equation.
